Fundamentals of Lesson Planning

Lesson preparation gets easier with practice, just like any other skill. Teachers pick up key planning principles as they gain practical experience in the classroom. Coherence, diversity, and flexibility are three core elements of excellent teaching that are usually emphasized when veteran teachers are asked to identify some basic lesson design ideas that rookie teachers should be aware of.

A cohesive and fluid instruction is a sign of a good lesson. This indicates that the lesson is a cohesive whole rather than merely a collection of isolated exercises. Links or threads that run through all of the lessons over the course’s days and weeks should be present. Students must comprehend the purpose behind each activity on a micro level. They also learn best when there are smooth transitions from one activity to the next.

A strong lesson features variety. The macro and micro levels both need to have this variability. While most students find comfort in a certain amount of predictability regarding the teacher, the texts, the classmates, and specific administrative procedures, lesson plans shouldn’t always follow the same format to prevent monotony and fatigue. Over the duration of the course, there should be variety in terms of themes, language, and abilities. Depending on the difficulty or simplicity of the content being covered, each daily session should include some variation in the speed of the class, such as time spent on different exercises.

From lesson to lesson, the proportions of teacher-fronted time and student-centered exercises should change. Some days, we want our students to participate and be active, while other days, we want them to focus more on listening and understanding.

This has been referred to by some teachers as the capacity to rouse or calm our students according on the situation. Each session should also include a variety of exercises for the classroom, including whole-class, small-group, pair, and solo tasks.

Mood fluctuations can be caused by the teacher’s attitude on a particular day, the compatibility of the student mix, the weather, current events, or some inexplicable factor. Different lessons will also have varying moods.

An effective lesson is adaptable. Irrespective of what the lesson plan states, good teachers have the flexibility to adapt an activity when it is necessary. It’s possible for an intriguing student question to lead the class in an unexpected route, creating one of those fantastic teaching opportunities you shouldn’t miss. When a teacher is writing on the board, a brilliant thought may strike. Sometimes, it is worthwhile to pursue these ideas despite the possibility of failure. Even failure can teach a teacher a vital lesson, regardless of their level of experience.
