Early literacy classrooms use observation-based assessment methods to demonstrate how learning data can be carefully gathered in addition to regular classroom practices. For instance, running records is one recording method used to record a child’s adaptations, gaps, and self-corrected errors while oral reading.

Teachers can determine students’ word recognition abilities as well as their ability to understand the text by paying particular attention to the form of student errors—called miscues to underline that students are reacting to cues even when they are erroneous. Teachers may also utilize tale retellings or specific questions about the text to gauge students’ understanding. Such assessments, which are frequently used as a reading activity’s follow-up, give students useful information while also emphasizing the value of reflecting on and discussing what they have read.

Informal assessment techniques can be structured to track students’ development over time, particularly if running records and story retells are kept in relation to graded texts or reading passages of increased complexity. Brief assessments during guided reading can be used to make timely educational decisions, such as concentrating on grammatical structures, emphasizing sense making, or shifting content level. Children’s book selection skills can be cultivated as a goal of teaching and are consequently subject to systematic observation, which is consistent with the idea of integrating students into the discussion and practices of a reading community.

Students in a classroom focused on literacy are far more likely to explore a variety of books before making a decision by reading aloud from different passages or searching for particular topics. Students without prior adult modeling may choose a book without even opening it.

Think-alouds or structured interviews are research methods that can be applied in classrooms to discover more about kids’ academic progress. One-on-one encounters give teachers a longer window of time to hear about, observe, and ask students about their learning processes. Additionally, individual interviews enable the execution of dynamic assessments that put to the test and thereby increase what a student is capable of doing with adult assistance. In these interactions, a teacher-clinician fully blurs the lines between assessment and education by not just acquiring data but also acting on it at the same time.

Like effective teaching, conducting professional interviews calls for teachers to be aware about the underlying developmental continuum. By going back along an assumed developmental path while doing an individual assessment when a student is unable to respond to a place value question, a new challenge is created that is more significant to the youngster.

Researchers can promote teachers’ learning by creating standards, but it is doubtful that teachers will acquire the kind of in-depth knowledge required unless they have a lot of experience dealing with students of a certain age and are using subject-specific curricula. Happily, one approach for teachers to build this knowledge base on usual progressions and common mistakes is to conduct such talks, perhaps with only just few students at a time.
